leadingtone:
Experimental system of cymatic music notation being developed by Daniel Reed. In his words:
I used cymatics as the inspiration and basis to form each square (note). I did this by using an amplifier and putting paper with salt ontop , I played each note on the piano and when the salt vibrated it moved the crystals and in some cases settled and formed patterns. I used some artistic licence when constructing the images and plotted the shapes by studing how the crystals moved. I then converted the formations into the vector images.
If the pattern was unclear and the frequency not strong enough to form a visable shape from the vibrations I then took inspiration from how I felt that note should look. Some have sharp edges and lines like the E’s and the B’s to capture the dissonance, I feel these notes naturally have a sharp edge to them and I echoed this is the design. This is the start of further projects I am doing exploring the relationship between image and sound. I am interested in minimalism and ways to present data simply and beautifully. This is a mix between my passion for music, typography and design.
